New conviction shines spotlight on unregulated ‘immigration advice’

A company director was fined 600 pounds for illegally giving immigration advice. Tariq Hussein, director of Immigration Assistance Services Ltd., pleaded guilty to three charges of providing immigration advice while not being qualified to do so.

Details of the case can be found here

While Hussein was charged for illegally providing immigration advice to companies, the issue of accessing legal advice – legitimate one, that is – is  of the utmost importance for individual migrants. The OISC website provides a search tool to find advice in one’s locality (and to complain about a registered advisor), while the Law Centres Network can point individuals toward less costly legal support.

MRN has released a comprehensive guide on immigration and rights issues for migrants in in collaboration with Against Borders for Children, Doctors of the World UK, Liberty, North East London Migrant Action (NELMA), and Project 17. The guide’s aim is to inform and equip migrants to deal with the complicated UK immigration system and the hostile environment created by the government administration.
